The quickest way to choose

If the task is “show me the public record,” begin with QuickConfirm. If the task is “send my license verification to another board,” follow that receiving board’s endorsement instructions and use Nurse License Verification when directed. The services can contain related license data, but the action they perform is different.

Confirm the destination before paying

NCSBN published a fee of $30 per license type, per board when this guide was checked. A nurse with more than one license type or more than one destination can therefore face more than one charge. Select the receiving board carefully and verify the live price and instructions before submitting payment.

Why a license might not appear

Nursys says QuickConfirm includes only participating-board licenses. A newly licensed record may arrive during a board's regular update cycle, some older records may not be present, and occasionally a board has not submitted a record. Use the official missing-record inquiry or contact the licensing board instead of treating absence as a definitive finding.

Do not send CNA searches to Nursys

Nursys identifies RN, practical/vocational nursing and APRN data in its system. Nurse aide or CNA status is maintained in separate state registries, sometimes by a health department and sometimes by a nursing board. Use the CNA route on the relevant state guide even when the same person also holds an RN or LPN license.

A public result is a point-in-time record

Printing or saving a QuickConfirm result records what the service displayed during that search. It does not create ongoing monitoring or guarantee that the receiving organization accepts the printout. Nursys e-Notify serves a different monitoring function; formal verification serves a different licensing function.

What to inspect on a QuickConfirm report

Begin with identity and scope. Match the name with the license number, profession and issuing jurisdiction. Then read each license line independently. A person may hold an RN license in one state, a practical-nurse license in another and an APRN authorization with additional state-specific information. Do not merge those lines into one conclusion.

Where displayed, review current status, expiration, single-state or multistate designation, practice privileges and publicly available discipline information. An expiration date in the future does not override a restrictive current status. A green state on an NLC map does not override a single-state designation on the individual record. If a report links an order, open the dated order and look for later modifications.

The endorsement workflow from start to finish

1. Open the receiving board’s endorsement instructions and confirm that it accepts Nursys verification from the state that issued the existing license.
2. Identify every license type that the receiving board requires. RN verification should not be assumed to transmit a separate practical-nurse or advanced-practice credential.
3. Select the correct destination board in Nurse License Verification. Similar agency names and separate RN/PN boards make this worth checking twice.
4. Review the live charge and submission summary before payment. The published amount is assessed by license type and destination, so a multi-license application can require more than one transaction.
5. Save the confirmation or transaction identifier. Then complete the receiving board’s application; verification alone is not an application for licensure.
6. Use the receiving board’s status process for follow-up. Repeating a paid verification is not the first troubleshooting step unless the board or Nursys directs it.

QuickConfirm, verification and e-Notify in practical scenarios

A patient or member of the public wants the current record

Use QuickConfirm or the state board’s public portal. Confirm the record owner and credential, and do not describe the result as an employment clearance or formal board transmission.

A nurse is applying in another state

Read the destination board’s endorsement checklist first. Use Nurse License Verification when that board requires Nursys transmission from a participating source board. The nurse may still owe an application fee, background documentation, education records or state-specific requirements to the destination.

An employer needs notice of later changes

A one-time public search does not monitor a license. NCSBN describes e-Notify as the service for ongoing notifications from participating boards. The employer still needs an identity-matching process and any other checks required for the role.

A nurse wants renewal reminders

NCSBN also offers e-Notify enrollment for nurses. It can help track reminders and status updates, but the board remains the authority for the actual renewal deadline, required education and completed renewal.

Common mistakes and how to recover

The wrong person was selected.

Return to the results and search by license number. If only a name is available, compare jurisdiction and credential and obtain another identifier from an authorized source.

The receiving board is missing.

Check whether it uses Nursys verification for the credential and source jurisdiction. Follow its official alternative-verification instructions rather than choosing a similar board.

Payment was made but the application is incomplete.

Verification and application are separate. Use the destination board’s application-status channel and retain the Nursys confirmation.

The report and state portal disagree.

Record both access times and exact fields, then contact the board that contributes the data. Do not decide which status is legally controlling on your own.

Is QuickConfirm primary-source verification?

NCSBN describes Nursys data as supplied by participating nursing regulatory bodies. Whether a specific employer, accreditor or licensing board accepts a QuickConfirm report for its required process is a separate question; ask the recipient what service and retention method it requires.

Does Nursys show every APRN detail?

APRN participation and displayed fields vary. Confirm state advanced-practice recognition, role, population focus and prescribing authority with the responsible board when those facts matter.

Can a screenshot be used later?

It documents what was visible when captured, subject to privacy and retention rules. It does not update itself, provide monitoring or replace a secure verification transmission.
