California LVN License Lookup
California LVN records belong to BVNPT, a separate board from RN nursing. Search the DCA vocational-nurse record and check any IV therapy or blood-withdrawal certification separately.
Official records
Official lookup and verification
Portal owner: California Department of Consumer Affairs / BVNPT
Covers: LVN licenses and displayed post-licensure certifications; psychiatric-technician records are a separate license type
Before you search
Have the right information ready
Best preparation
- Choose BVNPT and the vocational-nurse license type
- California uses LVN terminology; avoid the RN or psychiatric-technician category
Search options documented
- Board and license type
- Name or license number
Know the limits
- Expired or inactive LVN licenses do not authorize practice
- A post-licensure certification does not replace current LVN status
- BVNPT warns that updates and posting may be delayed
Portal-specific walkthrough
How to complete the California LVN search
Choose the vocational-nursing board
Use DCA License Search and select the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Choose the vocational-nurse type within that board. Psychiatric technician is a separate license even though the same board regulates it.
Find the intended LVN
Search by the license number or name. Check the spelling against the information you have and compare the credential on each candidate result. If the number is available, use it to resolve ambiguity instead of assuming a same-name person is the intended nurse.
Read the status before relying on the dates
Open the individual record. BVNPT explains that a license must be current and active for LVN practice; an expired or inactive license is insufficient. Review the displayed status and expiration together rather than keeping only the date.
Check additional certifications only when relevant
The board identifies IV therapy and blood-withdrawal certifications among the details its search may show. If the work being checked depends on one of those certifications, record that field independently and ask BVNPT about unclear or absent information.
Inspect discipline and select the next service
Follow public document links from the DCA record. Use the BVNPT discipline index or Enforcement contact when a referenced file is unavailable. If your purpose is sending verification to another state, switch to the Nursys endorsement process described by BVNPT.

What the result can tell you
Fields or record details documented in this workflow
- Name and license number
- Expiration date and license status
- County of residence
- IV therapy or blood-withdrawal certification when recorded
- LVN versus psychiatric technician
- The shared board name does not make these records interchangeable. Match the vocational-nurse credential and number before interpreting the status.
- IV therapy or blood-withdrawal entry
- Read this as an additional certification attached to the record. Do not infer it solely from the fact that an LVN license exists.
- Disciplinary order
- Read the order in full, including conditions and dates. A short status label cannot substitute for the document that describes the action.
This guide explains published terms; only the responsible regulator can determine the legal effect of a specific record.

Work through this checklist before drawing a conclusion
- Confirm BVNPT and the vocational-nurse license type. A search limited to BRN records cannot establish the LVN match.
- Try the license number, then a less restrictive name search. Check whether a former name explains why the initial search did not match.
- If a displayed certification or renewal differs from the expected record, note the exact field and ask BVNPT to reconcile it. Do not treat a receipt as an updated public record.
- For a missing document, contact the Board’s Enforcement Unit through its official site. For a general license question, use the Board contact page.
A missing search result is not, by itself, proof that a person has never held a California credential.
Public lookup vs. formal verification
Choose the process the receiving organization requires
BVNPT announced that license-verification requests moved to Nursys on July 2, 2025. For LVN endorsement elsewhere, follow the destination board’s instructions and use the official Nursys process. A DCA result remains a public lookup, not a completed endorsement application.

LVN discipline is handled by BVNPT
BVNPT directs readers to the DCA license record for public disciplinary documents. Its discipline index explains common orders and provides a route to Enforcement if a document is unavailable. The board also links Nursys e-Notify for employer status updates.

California is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact
An out-of-state multistate RN or LPN/VN license does not itself establish California authority. Check the California credential and the responsible board’s instructions for your situation.
Applies to: The NLC covers qualifying RN and LPN/VN licenses; it does not cover CNA certification or APRN authority.

Questions from this workflow
California LVN lookup questions
Is a California LVN the same search as an RN?
Both use DCA, but the selected board and license type differ. LVNs are regulated by BVNPT; RNs are regulated by BRN.
Where can I check IV or blood-withdrawal certification?
BVNPT says these post-licensure certifications are included in its online record when applicable. Review the individual LVN entry and contact the Board if the information is unclear.
Should I mail an old LVN verification form?
Check BVNPT’s current notice first: the Board moved these verification requests to Nursys in July 2025. Follow the receiving board’s instructions for your situation.
