California RN License Lookup

Use DCA License Search for California RN status and linked BRN orders. Sending verification to another state, verifying advanced practice and checking a public record are separate tasks.

Official records

Official lookup and verification

Portal owner: California Department of Consumer Affairs / Board of Registered Nursing

Covers: California RN records and separately selected BRN certificate types

Official links manually checked October 1, 2026Public search; no payment step on the search form

Before you search

Best preparation

  • Select the Board of Registered Nursing and the RN license type
  • Use the public search; a BreEZe application account is a different workflow

Search options documented

  • Board and license type
  • License number
  • First and last name

Know the limits

  • RN status alone does not verify an advanced-practice certificate
  • A saved public result does not send verification to another board
  • BRN cautions that posting delays or errors can occur

Portal-specific walkthrough

How to complete the California RN search

  1. Choose the RN regulator in DCA

Start at search.dca.ca.gov. In the board selector, choose the Board of Registered Nursing, then the registered-nurse license type. Selecting vocational nursing or a continuing-education provider searches a different record category.

  2. Search with the strongest identifier you have

Use a license number when available. For a name search, compare the returned number and credential with the information you intended to check. Do not select the first same-name entry merely because it is geographically close.

  3. Open the individual license detail

Read the current status alongside the dates and credential label. Keep the RN check separate from a nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist or other advanced-practice certificate. A name can be associated with more than one professional record.

  4. Follow the documents attached to the record

BRN places available disciplinary documents below license status. Review the effective date and any later order. If a referenced document is unavailable, use BRN Enforcement rather than drawing a conclusion from the missing file.

  5. Decide whether this finishes your task

For a public check, record the source and time using the printable checklist. For endorsement, use the receiving board’s instructions and BRN’s formal-verification page. Do not pay for another service until you know what the recipient requires.

What the result can tell you

Fields or record details documented in this workflow

  • License identity and type
  • Current status and displayed dates
  • Linked public disciplinary documents, when available
RN license versus advanced-practice certificate
Treat each credential as a separate check. A positive RN match does not answer a request to verify a specific advanced-practice authorization.
Accusation or pending matter
BRN distinguishes an accusation from a final disciplinary decision. Identify the document type and read its procedural status before describing a finding.
Probation or a stayed revocation
BRN’s terminology explains that practice may be subject to conditions. Read the actual order, its effective date and later modifications; do not reduce the result to whether the expiration date is in the future.

This guide explains published terms; only the responsible regulator can determine the legal effect of a specific record.

No record found?

Work through this checklist before drawing a conclusion

  1. Recheck the selected board and license type before changing the name or number.
  2. Remove unnecessary search constraints and try the license number independently of the name. Keep a note of which search you tried.
  3. If a record was recently issued or changed, compare the official record again and ask BRN about an unresolved discrepancy. Do not equate an application receipt with an issued license.
  4. Use the BRN contact page for record questions. Keep identity details in the official agency channel rather than sending them to this directory.

A missing search result is not, by itself, proof that a person has never held a California credential.

Public lookup vs. formal verification

Choose the process the receiving organization requires

BRN directs California RN verification for another U.S. state to Nursys. Advanced-practice verification and international requests follow BRN’s separate BreEZe instructions. Identify the recipient and credential first; these services are not interchangeable.

RN endorsement to another state

Check the current official instructions and any fee before submitting

Follow the receiving board’s requirements and select the intended license and destination.

Open official service

Advanced practice or another country

Check the current official instructions and any fee before submitting

Read BRN’s current request instructions. An RN Nursys transmission does not include advanced-practice certificates.

Public orders and cases

Read BRN orders from the DCA record

Use the BRN discipline guide to distinguish allegations, decisions and restrictions. A missing download is a reason to ask Enforcement for the document; it is not evidence that a case ended or that a restriction disappeared.

Nurse Licensure Compact

California is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact

An out-of-state multistate RN or LPN/VN license does not itself establish California authority. Check the California credential and the responsible board’s instructions for your situation.

Applies to: The NLC covers qualifying RN and LPN/VN licenses; it does not cover CNA certification or APRN authority.

Questions from this workflow

California RN lookup questions

Is DCA the official California RN source?

BRN identifies DCA License Search as its primary-source public lookup. Open the RN record there and follow any links to public documents.

Do I need to log into BreEZe for a public RN search?

The DCA public search presents search fields without an application-account sign-in. BRN uses BreEZe accounts for separate requests, including certain formal verifications.

Can I use an RN result to verify a California nurse practitioner?

Check the relevant advanced-practice credential separately. For a formal request, BRN says advanced-practice certificates are not included in RN verification through Nursys.
