- The nurse's license number when available
- The nurse's current or former legal name when searching by name

- Opening a public record is not the same as sending formal verification to another board
- A Texas record alone does not prove that an RN holds multistate authority

How to complete the Texas RN search
Open the Board's verification portal
Use the official button on this page. Complete the security check if it appears; the lookup runs on a Board-authorized domain separate from bon.texas.gov.
Search with the strongest identifier
Use the Texas license number when you have it. Otherwise enter the nurse's name as shown on the license. If the name changed, repeat the search with the former or maiden name.
Match the credential and person
Confirm that the result is an RN record for the intended person. Do not rely on name alone when several people have similar names.
Open status and order details
Read the complete Board record. When the record links a public Board order, open the source document rather than drawing a conclusion from a short status label.

Fields or record details documented in this workflow
- The Texas nursing credential and current record status

- Single-state versus multistate
- Texas participates in the NLC, but only a qualifying RN whose primary state of residence is Texas and whose license carries multistate authority may use that Texas license in other party states.
- Board order
- The Texas Board says disciplinary Board orders are public information and can be opened from a nurse's license number in its disciplinary records. Read the order itself for its terms and date.
- Unencumbered
- Texas's compact materials define an encumbrance as a revocation, suspension or limitation on full and unrestricted nursing practice. Ask the Board for authoritative interpretation of a specific record.
This guide explains published terms; only the responsible regulator can determine the legal effect of a specific record.

Work through this checklist before drawing a conclusion
- Remove extra search filters and retry with the license number if it is available.
- Retry the current legal name, former name and maiden name separately.
- Confirm that the credential is a nursing license regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing; CNA records use the HHSC Nurse Aide Registry instead.
- Try Nursys QuickConfirm, remembering that missing or newly submitted records can require follow-up with the contributing board.
- Contact Texas Board of Nursing Customer Service rather than assuming the person is unlicensed.
A missing search result is not, by itself, proof that a person has never held a Texas credential.

Public lookup answers a different question from formal verification. Texas endorsement instructions direct applicants to Nursys for electronic verification from participating U.S. jurisdictions; another receiving board may give its own instructions.

How Texas publishes disciplinary information
The Board states that disciplinary Board orders are public. Its disciplinary-action directory links license numbers to orders, and the license lookup may also expose an associated order. A list entry or status is not a substitute for reading the dated order.

Texas is an NLC state—but not every Texas RN license is multistate
Texas implemented the enhanced NLC on January 19, 2018. The compact covers RN and LVN practice, not Texas APRN authorization or nurse aide certification. Verify the individual nurse's multistate status in the official record or Nursys.

Texas RN lookup questions
Why does the Texas RN portal show a security check?
The Board-authorized lookup is protected by automated traffic screening. Allow the security check to complete, disable an interfering content blocker for that official portal if necessary, and reload it directly rather than inside another website.
Can I use the Texas lookup result for endorsement?
Do not assume so. The Texas Board's endorsement material distinguishes electronic Nursys verification from a public lookup. Follow the receiving board's instructions and use formal Nursys Nurse License Verification when required.
Where can I read a Texas nursing Board order?
Open the license record or the Texas Board's Disciplinary Actions directory. The Board says the license number links to public Board orders when an order is available.
Does a Texas RN license work in every compact state?
Only if the nurse actually holds a multistate license issued by the primary state of residence and retains eligibility. Texas also requires a nurse practicing for a patient in Texas to follow Texas practice law.
